I have Portamig 215 which I have on the lowest power setting 1-1, wire speed 6, CO2/5% Argon mix. I have only just started welding and practiced a few runs on 0.9 and now 1.2mm metal. Some runs are okay but none look very nice.
Being very impatient I had a go at welding the seams on a box section (sorry there is no photo of the inside) - I did it by folding the metal in so in effect it is a lap joint. The weld did penetrate inside though only just so I also added a few tack welds to the lapped metal inside.
Unlike the 0.9mm metal I find that I have to move very slowly to get the weld to penetrate properly, especially with a lap which doubles the thickness. I would love to get the hang of doing those nice looking runs. Some of the metal on my 1962 car is less than 0.9mm and has lovely butt welds, presumably using an arc welder?
Any thoughts or advice appreciated, thanks, Christian.
