Welding technique sill repair

Hi guys,

First post and I've brought myself here as my car needs the sill repairing. I'm hoping to decide by tomorrow morning based on your valued advice.


The sill jacking point has corroded and an outer plate of metal has begun to peel away, and this is possibly due to a badly done previous repair so I am informed.



My question is - in the context that I got a few body shop repair quotes to weld the sill, the most reputable body shop said... make sure you get the plate welded blended in because welding a plate over the top isn't the best long-term fix.

Basically I got quotes for £50-100 from a couple of shops, and the most reputable shop wanted £200 including stone chipping.



what is a "blended in" weld or what is the guy talking about? And why would it cost double the price of the other places.

there's a good write up ^^ up there somewhere about an aston martin sill repair, it's in the tutorials i think, there's also an excellent write up on retrorides by a contributor called tonybmw - the thread is called 'making panels', they both clearly demonstrate the right way to repair sills, your cheapest quote - i would suspect - is to plate over the rot creating a 2 year delay before the same problem rears its head... someone asked guidance only a few days ago about the correct steps for a sill repair that spreaded into the floorpan IIRC... should still be on the first page in this section

£50- £100 is only a few hours labour, possibly 2- 4 hours if the garage charges £25 or £50 per hour. That would probably mean an overlapped patch.

Ask the reputable bodyshop how they will do the repair.

The longest lasting repair would be a butt welded section, with the inside zinc primed and then protected with waxoyl and th outside as they said, stone chipped and painted.

Is the car a cheap survivor runabout or something a bit special?
