8 x 4 sheet of 6mm plate for a bench, works fine and isnt that expensive to build
I want to build a welding table in the near future as well, but I'm not quite sure what to do for the top. I'd like to use a good thick piece (10mm +/-), and the scrap yard has a whole lot of it for cheap.
My only problem is that my welder will only do up to 3mm(and that's pushing it). But if I'm going to be using a 3x4' top, welded as best I can in place, will the weight be enough to make up for the "crappy" welds?
if it makes a difference, I want to mount a vice and my grinder to it.

ooh i had a thought, i like to be able to move it on retractable wheels but when there up, how about using stillage feet on the legs

rusty, when i get my rear in gear and have a little time. i intend to make a second bench, which is on wheel. so i can use it with the first bench to either give me an 8' x 8' bench or a 16' x 4' bench
Sounds like time to get a old pallet truck and raid the mechanism and space it out time
3 wheels would be more stable, and you can always have four legs if you must...
Must be able to lay your hands on a rusty knackered pallet truck somehow...

nice one murex. best bench i had was when i was doing a little sub-contracting for someone in Kent for a few weeks, making bulding site gates. A nice brand new bit of 3mtr x 2mtr 25mm thick steel plate, just for me to weld the gates on. I got called a few names by the guy's he had working for him as they had mankey old benches that had seen better days and i had the brand new plate. It does make a world of difference having a steel plate bench, makes life so much better

how much that then
a nice flat(ish) surface for laying out on nice........, on my reseach i've found a few tables where people have drilled fixing holes though the top plate for jigs and fixtures

the guy i do repair work on the skips for got it for me his mate works on the roads and got me a sheet used the skip lorry to pick it up

Mine's a piece of 12mm hardox about 3' by 4'. The tig is in the cupboard to the right with two 12" extraction fans above. Had to drill the holes for the vice with tungsten carbide broach.

Welding table....
Mine is open top 45 gallon drum, with a lump 30" square of 10mm plate welded to it.
I half filled the drum with a few bags of cement that went hard & added a bit of water.
Surprisingly its very mobile, as you can tilt it and roll it about.
I did drill a 12mm hole in the side of it, as it creaked abit with change of temp without the hole.
It was cheap & I've had it 20years.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I now have four of them, identical constuction thus they are the same height, I can set them up into a long table or a square one. Or stagger them for fabricating big frames with access between drums.

My jig table is made from1/2" plate 2800 x 1100 main frame is 80 x 40 x 3 box with adjustable legs.
My weld bench is made from 1/2 plate 1800 x 1240 and the frame is made from 100 x 100 x 6 angle with a couple of drawers and torch holders on all four corners and several 12mm tapped holes for fixing things down to the workbench.
