These might seem fairly basic question but the only silly question is the one you don't ask....

Anti spatter spray - I assume that this is just sprayed all over the work area to stop splatter sticking. Any particular type I should be looking for and does it need to be cleaned off after work, if so with what?

Primer - the work needs to be clean before welding but I assume weld-thru primer can be sprayed over the cleaned area to stop rust before the weld, any particular type the best for cars and does this affect the future paint job on top?

Once welded what is the best primer to coat the work area while I continue that I can then paint over, bearing in mind I will be spraying the car myself once I work out how to do this........

Anti spatter is alright. You can get water based stuff or aerosol. Personally, I acquired 5lts, and used about 4 sprays, the forgot I had it until we moved.

Primer, a light coat of SAS Zinc Primer is all I use, when I remember.

Primer, you'd be best stripping back once complete and using an epoxy primer, then a mist of colour coat followed by high build which you'd then flat back

I use plenty of veg oil in my dirty diesel, so I suppose i could spare some..

most of the anti spatter sprays are veg oil based anyway iirc

i'm using binzel water based @ mo' ,however all the water based ones i,ve used give intermittent operation in those hand held plant sprayers!!

anti spatter is mostly a waste of time and counter productive. Best use is on jigs used in process work and on mig shrouds. Suffice to say I don't really use it and only have ever used it around jigs

Why don`you save money and just run a pair of snips round the end of your nozzle.This will get rid of all your slag!

Their talking about anti spatter, your talking about Tip Dip!

tip dip is also very useful as a more resistant/longer lasting anti-spatter smeared on the surrounding surfaces on some jobs.

i always burn off the fresh application for several seconds before welding commences-try it.

Yeah tried that still don't like it, I just grab a new shroud once mine starts becoming a bit of a nob and too hard to remove the accumulated spatter wth a pair of side cutters.

I think on car work anti spatter will cause far more problems than it solves, especially if its oil based.

First try to reduce spatter, then accept that some will need to be cleaned off, but if you are dressing welds for visible areas it will be taken off anyway.

The thought of trying to get all traces of contamination off the work for the paint to adhere doesn't bear thinking about. You are asking for paint failure later.

Weld with as little spatter as possible, clean it off where necessary and paint immediately with whatever primer you like, everyone seems to be raving about epoxy primer nowadays but I haven't tried it yet, for where I've been welding I use zinc rich primer to keep it good until its time for paint prep.

The biggest improvement I ever saw in spatter on my car work was a few years ago when I changed from CO2 to Argoshield. What are you using?

The importance of a really good earth connection can't be overstated. It really helps to reduce spatter, especially at the start of a weld.
