Welding Stainless, Advice needed

Hi everyone,

I'm going to be starting a new job on Monday, working as part of a welding/fabrication team in an Ice Cream factory. I've got a feeling that it's going to involve some stainless work with MIG, which I've never done before. Obviously I don't want to turn up and look like a numpty (might be a bit difficult in my case ), so I have a couple of questions.....

When welding SS with MIG is just a case of changing the settings/gas/wire to suit the material, and then using the same technique as with low carbon steel?

Also, any other tips on welding SS would be very appreciated.

I think food grade SS welding in an ice cream factory would most likely be tig and is reasonably specialised due to hygiene considerations.
If you're starting the job as a trainee then you shouldn't be worried, everyone has to start somewhere.

As Woz states, any s/s that is involved in contact by food product will be tig welded, if welding pipe/tube, purge will be required.

I would imagine welding using mig will be trolleys and the like, nothing specialized. As for welding, adopt same method you would for mig welding steel..........

I thought that the pipes would be done with TIG, and my boss knows that I'm not really qualified for that, but I was more talking about any frames, handrails, staircases, ect....
