Oh happy days. Got the car MOT’ed yesterday and it failed thanks to some nice rust holes in the sills.
I am contemplating getting someone to do the job for me as I just want the car on the road again … however I have a welder and its about time I put it to proper use and learn something useful.
Thankfully the shapes I need to weld aren’t to complicated, so that’s a bonus, they are just going to be a ****** to get to!
Before I get carried away can anyone offer some pointers?
I have read that the welding needs to continuous and not spot welded. If I lay a line of spot welds down in a row, 1 on top of the other would this be acceptable for the MOT tester?
After doing the welding, does it need to be presented in a particular state so the tester can confirm the repair or can I prime / seal and over paint?
The areas affected are 2x 6 inch sections at the back of the sill / floor pan. What sort of gauge steel should I use for the repair? I was planning on using zintec.
The repair will sit up to the seam on the sill – would you recommend I weld directly to this seam or make the repair section to have a mating face and then weld that the seam instead (probably need to put on some photo’s so its clear!)
Any help and guidance is appreciated, this is going to be a first time welding a car and frankly I am bricking it, I have buzzed together bit a bobs but its all heavier gauge stuff that can just be thrown away if I ball’s it up!
Thanks
James
