exposed live conductor on the transformer primary connection and earth core not connected. (Not that you would find connecting to the delaminated core easy anyway)

That transformer is magnificent. I love the way the laminations are tied together with pyjama cord. I suppose it buzzes quite loudly when under load.

The air gaps are to prevent saturation. It is part of the design...

i rekon these picture were taken for a laugh.
if real these guys have the knowledge to knock up a transformer and get it to weld but not to house it in a box and make it safe and easier to use.

But that would be a waste of valuable material - which they haven't got.

yes cos they can fix it.... unlike most british establishments

My father's first welder he bought from a bloke that worked at the telco and used the scrap copper wire to wind the welder coils himself. It was a super basic jobby with the different coils connected to brass screws held in place with pratlys putty. I am sure, seeing the casing of that thing, that the blokes own welder did not have a casing. He just made a hack casing for the ones he sold. This was in South Africa.
