Welding qualifications

Hello everyone, I've been seriously considering taking course in welding and becoming qualified. The only college that does welding qualifications within a commutable distance offers quite a few courses and it's quite confusing.

In the full time prospectus we have: Performing engineering operations - Welding NVQ EAL Level 2.

In the part time: CG L3 (I think that stands for city and guilds) Certificate in Engineering (Welding) and then you have Year 1 and Year 2 as an option.

Also in the part time: Fabrication and Welding Engineering Work Based NVQ L3

What should I go for out of those?

Personally I'd look into C&G course first, L2 pretty basic, normally one year course over two days per week, L3 same, except one day at college, if you are not employed with fab/weld game, L3 will be very difficult to achieve as it is vocational and, as you state, work based.

What about the level 1 course Cty and Glds? Is that a prequisite to Level 2?

this is the course i did at college. this was p/t when i did it though
you can choose between plate or sheet metal fabs
goin back to do level 3 this year hopefully
then get me codings hurray

Sounds a very similar name to the one i did first, the 'Performing Manufacturing operations, NVQ2.
Dont know how much it varies college to college, but that gave the opertunity to do gas, mma, mig and tig, towards the end you could choose which one you wanted to concentrate on. F/T (sort of anyway!) for 3 months.

PMO is still around. We delivered the PEO last year to our student ended up being a bad head for paperwork all forms in triple etc

PEO L2 can and is completed within college, units chosen are delivered to meet criteria to achieve L2.

L3 is a combination of NC units (required to achieve NC group award and MA cert) and VQ units, VQ element is all work based, there are various pathways for each individual, for example, metal worker will follow SMW pathway, structural fabricator, obviously structural pathway. Bit more to choosing various elements from pathways, it is a case of knowing type of work individual will be doing to decide various units from pathway, 3 mandatory units are across the board for L2&3.

As for paperwork.................PEO must be responsible for loss of a few forests!!

So the only one that is feasible to complete for me is the NVQ L2? Both the C&G and the NVQ L3 have vocational units that are work based? I'm ringing the college tomorrow morning and hopefully sending the application off.

I have never been involved with C&G since I got into this game, certainly when I did my C&G no part was work based, unless goalposts have been moved?

If I were an employer looking to take on an apprentice, if a lad had any type of cert at all would in my view give him more credibility than a lad with no certs at all!

As many on here will know. I have done and still do an evening class of City & guilds level 1 and 2 in TIG/Arc/MIG/Oxy - acetylene. These are not work based and can be done as night classes.

this might be different but for the electrical technical certificate that is college based but the NVQ3 is work based

The 1 evening class per week ten or seventeen week City & Guilds 3267 - ** courses Certificate Level 1 & 2 are definitely free to unemployed, no matter which part of the UK they are in. this link shows what the exams and lessons entail.
