The cables you buy have nice cauterised ends.
Cut the cable to length, poke it down the outer, through
an adjuster and clamp it, do that a few times, with the same cable, and you find the cable frays and you have trouble getting it through holes/outers and so on; I am thinking mainly of the rear derailleur cable, when I have to strip and clean the shifter as it's decided I should be riding a single speed bike.
I tried soldering the ends, but haven't had cause to take those cables off and re-use them; I am guessing it will be fine.
I tried welding the end of a cable the other day.I have been meaning to try it for ages. It worked really well. I went at it something like: hold the tungsten 10 thou or so from the end of the cable, give the peddle a kick and it's done.
