Welding pipework

Hi all

I am making a bio-diesel plant and i am using 1" red band pipe, i want to weld the joints but was told that MIG was not suitable for pipe work?

Can anyone confirm this for me..

You can use any process for pipe, but you need to use the right process for the right job (or what the WPS states), I mean, production welding larger pipe with Mig is one thing, with 1" you're going to struggle and it'd be far, far easier (and better) with TIG. Also, IIRC red band is quite heavy pipe used normally for steam, is there going to be alot of pressure/heat, and is using threaded connections out of the question?

Hi Rob,

I think you might find that you have been advised against MIG welding the pipe because MIG weld is more prone to be porous than other processes.

I was told this after I made a fuel tank for a kit car - it used to vacuum until I fitted a breather pipe

Secondly, I am really interested in following this project as I have looked at bio plants for ages but never looked into it really closely.

Oxy acetylene would work or Tig !
