Welding Petrol tank brackets

I want to move the brackets on a fuel tank for my shogun raising it by about 2 inches. The tank has been empty of fuel for 3-4 months and i have flushed out with water. I am going to flush out again with water and washing up liquid and with a steamer.

Im planning on cutting the existing brackets and adding in a piece of 5mm plate. I have scored a line for where im planning on cutting which you can see in the photos.

I am planning to have the tank filled with water when i weld and do it outside.

Am i taking enough precautions or can anyone advise anything i can do reduce the chance of it blowing up?

as u said fill it with water and it will be ok. no probs on safety isue

Stick a pipe on your car exhaust and run some fumes through it while you do the job, you look far enough away from the actual tank to be safe anyway.

Do a search on the forum this has been discussed in many many times, exhaust is general no no due to the mix of gases which can become combustable....

Without an Oxygen tester and knowledge of how to set a purge, I would say there is NO other safe option.... you only get one chance to do this correctly so be safe

if its anway help, i would say OFN, im a refrigeration engineer by trade and use it when ever i braze a new bit in to a system, i purge with OFN, it also stops oxidising on the side of the pipes also.
i know thats gas welding/brazing, but if you could get some OFN, you could pudge the tank through with OFN and i dont see any reason why it wouldnt be ok.., thats how i will do a fuel tank on a car im restoring at the mo when the time comes

I've welded a couple of tanks using the fill to the brim method. No purging, (why purge, it's full of water so no air?).

I never thought of that! This sounds the safest plan as i keep the tank well away from the welder!
