Welding out of grid

HELLO

I have this generator

And i want to plug on it an electric weld device, that i didn't bought yet, I don't know which one does, I believe that I need a very energy efficient one, because my generator is small.

The job is very light pre-welding work in an outer post out of grid, no deep welding needed,
Is there any device that can do my job powered by the generator that already own?

also, what if i turn the current switch of the welding device in a low position, does makes any difference in the energy that the device uses/needs?

your generator is way too small and inverter
welders dont like generators you need one with AVR you would be better off with a welder/generator unit

you will usually need around a 6kva genny to run a hobby welder, and as said most inverters wont run long on a genny, and then not at all afterwards

My generator says that it has Automatic Voltage Regulation... so the problem is that is too small and not the AVR?

Yeah , that's what I found when I first lived here with no mains power , I have a 4.5 KVA genny and I wanted to weld up a steel fire back to improve the heat output from a open fire ... well the welder (a sealey 150 buzz box )just needed more watts to make a weld that had any strength. I had to run a cable 100 metres to a mates house to get the job done ....jeff

what a coincidence.. I'm in Crete too, but i will need more the 100 meters cable... maybe some kilometers...

So what else can i do

I tried to find oxygen-fuel torch, but is not easy here, i also can't find acetylene...

Only propane torches but are only for copper they say and i want to weld iron.

any ideas will be nice

or you could go down the battery route but all depends on how much welding you are trying to do

I'm living in Heraklion and the job is in the middle of Messara plain,
as it says in the video, the batteries welding is for third world situations, just like here.

the welder shown in the first post has a potentiometer that varies the ampere (?) you think its position does makes any difference in the energy consumption of the welder?

yes, as the welding amps go up so does the input current, after all you need more current to make more current

lets say,

If i plug that welder to my generator and start increasing the potensiometer from the 0 point, to a point beneath that the generator overloads... would i have the maximum weld power that my generator can give me?

is there danger of immediately broke the generator or the welder?

i can buy the welder, try it, and then turn it back and take something else if is not broken, im thinking to do that.

It would be a bad idea to put a stick welder on your generator, you risk damaging the alternator. Can you rent a welder generator for the job?

that will be the last choice, may i buy a welder and rent a bigger than mine generator, welder with generator 2in1 i never seen for renting.

i just noticed that there is two kinds of arc welders, inverter and non inverter, are the non inverter more suitable for using with a generator? the inverder isn't the sensitive part?

and what is the alternator?

I don't know if they are available to rent in Greece but purpose built engine driven welders are quite common, call a few hire company's and ask them.

I don't know how well an inverter would run on a small generator.

The alternator is the part of the generator than generates the AC power.

I've lived here for 8 years and I've never seen a tool hire company. Maybe in the city like Heraklion .. I think maybe you need to make whatever you are making somewhere with a power supply and drill and bolt it together on site if that is possible, I've done that with gates etc and fences ..jeff..

I have run proper inverter welders, not chinese *****, from small generators lots of times without problems.most decent ones are designed to run off them, or hundreds of meters of cable, and are advertised to do so.non inverter types I would imagine are worse on gennies due to the initial surge current?
I have even run a big 3 phase 400 amp powcon from a small 4kw home made rotary converter, high enough to burn 3.2mm 7018's without issue.that welder is twenty something years old
I can remember an ewm inverter I had would safely operate on 230v -40% to +15%.do the maths and that range is huge.

1.6mm or 2.0mm rods take little current, or if a small non refillable bottle of argon is accessible, even less current with more control is possible with tig.

I remember seeing a little resettable device, made by Solter I think, that is placed/plugged in line with a welder, that kills the power if it goes outside of a specified range.
it was matched to one of their range of inverters

I've run a chinese stick inverter (150a) from on of these:

Which doesn't have an AVR - never had any problems, and I've put hours of welding on that machine. The killer is the voltage overshoot on the 220v when you break the arc - if the bridge rectifiers and smoothing caps aren't rated for >300v, then they'll go bang.
