Welding on a diesel car

I always disconnect both the +ve and the -ve and bolt them together, never had a problem doing that in over 25 years but I have known a couple of cases where the ECU's got fried by relying on those surge protectors you clip across the battery.

Problem with disconnecting battery these days is that ecu's need resetting sometimes.A fair few german cars even need lights resetting if you remove the seats.

That's ridiculous, cars get more crazy (stupid) each year. All to stop you doing anything.

The more I see and hear about modern cars the more determined I am to drive old stuff.

Mind you, even that didn't help when I welded the sills on my Morris Minor some years ago, spotted a crack on the inner wheel arch so did a lovely bit of gas welding to stitch it back together, just a shame I hadn't taken the carpets out; at least the building survived...

About 25 years ago I did a small job on a mates car, last weld of the day when all else had gone home I climbed out from under it and thought, "I don't remember this car having tinted windows!" it was then I could see a small glow from inside, you know when you get that feeling..... anyway I sprinted for the standby bucket of water and ran back to the car, shame he had locked the doors!! Off to grab the key but sadly enough time had passed to cause some damage! It amazes me that having removed all the rugs and rear seats the one inch long last weld of the day managed to ignite the seat belt and side column, well those and the wiring loom that supply's the whole of the rear end of the car! I guess it was payback for all the times I had laughed when the guys were gas welding the lorry's and setting fire to the cabs, those guys always had a bucket of water on standby, still, hardest part was the phone call, "mate, I've done yer car, all you need now is......"
