Welding nuts onto brake nipples.

Today I had the misfortune of trying to free a bleeder screw from a brake caliper. As far as nipples go it was stought at 10mm shaft diameter. I cleaned it,heated it,used a crayon,used wd40,nothing budged it.

I tried welding a nut to it time and time again it simply snapped a bit off it. Did I ruin the temper when I heated it to cherry repeatedly?

I recently swapped a pair of calipers. Short of drilling nothing would shift the bleeders or the hoses

I brazed brake pipe into nipples before, but not for brakes. Wouldn't think you'd get a tight enough seal without the taper.

I feel your pain.
You could try to drill a little way into, if it drills reasonably well, then that would rule out the tempering question. The heat put into it would bleed away into the calliper quite quickly.
Stick with the welding a nut on it. il you think about an easy out, then this should be avoided at all costs. I’ve been there and it generally ends in sorrow.

Thank you for your reply,I did drill right through it in the end. At the start it was prettty hard,I was going to blow out the pistons with compressed air but gripping one piston with vice grips fractured it so the whole thing will be binned sadly.

a lot of calipers are so cheap now its hardly worth the pain of messing with the old ones! couldnt believe how cheap they were for the girlfriends vw caddy van!

I put rear pads in last night,I noticed the pistons on one side were too hard to push in. However I thought it would be ok,sadly they dragged a bit so I thought I would pull the caliper off to free them up. Oh well,it needed a new caliper anyhow

a caliper for my 130i m sport bmw was 31 quid with no core charge ,,, I wouldnt get the oxy acet out for that , now an expensive caliper may be different.

Asking here as this is on my to-do list, any suggestions where I can find new/recon calipers for a classic Marina?
Best I can find are near £100 each + post...
ANG have a full (2x) caliper rebuild kit around £45 + post but that will need time in the workshop and has the risk of seized nipples, stuck pistons, all the usual fun that will eat into my pub time.

100 quid each sounds about right to be honest. Cheap really if you think how much time and effort is included overhauling your own!
