Is it (or can it possibly be) normal that auto darkening lenses will not really darken much when you look at them at steeper angles?
Today when looking at a fluorescent tube up close, I noticed that with my left eye the last 25% of the lens on the right side seems to not darken, and vice versa with the right eye the last 25% on the left side do not darken much at all. Thus when you look with both eyes straight ahead, it appears that the center is darkening and not so much the corners.
Since I have before only looked at lightbulbs and the sun to test my lenses, I have not really noticed it to be this profound. I am not sure if the lenses are going bad or if this is actually normal. If it is normal though, suppose you are not looking dead center into the lenses like you almost always do, because you are in an awkward position, then would it mean that you would damage your left eye if the arc happened to be visible in the outermost right corner? Or is like with 3D glasses in a way, that the lenses act like a tunnel and the light comes out angled then it won't darken correctly but it won't really be able to exit very bright either?
The lenses are fairly new and the battery is new and fully charged also.
I want to stress that it is not the case that the corners do not darken. The problem is that when you look at the lens at a steep angle, like the left eye does when looking at the right corner of the lens, only then the darkening seems to fade. I have only tested against this with harmless light sources, not the arc itself.
