Hi everyone I'm matt I'm 21, I'm on a mission to get to Oz for the summer 2013. I've just got my city and guilds level 2 in welding does city and guild mean anything over there? And can does a first class welder and second class welder mean? Can some help please?.. Thanks

seriously though i have a pal the qualified as a plumber over here. his wife wlis Australian and the moved over to Perth. he could not get work as his UK qualms were no good over there. so they're back in Perth here
do make sure your qualms are valid and you have the correct visas for working

i have a mate working in Australia and he has no formal qualifications he spent 4 years learning to be a fabricator at a welding company locally he got some paperwork from them stating he was up to standard but obviously that doesn't compare to city and guilds i know of very few company's in this area who send apprentices for outside training these days, basically he went across looked up different engineering company's and asked for a job if you come across as knowing what you are talking about they will give you a chance and probably put you on a months trial , work hard and things will work out for you and it helps if you know somebody over there as well, good luck.
City and Guilds won't mean anything to them mate. It all depends what work you will be looking for. If you are after the big money FIFO jobs then forget it with your qualifications and experience. If you just want to weld gates and the like then you might stand a chance of finding something. First class welder is as it states mate, a multi coded , multi process and highly experienced welder, these guys usually work on power stations/ oil refineries etc. Second class is anything else.

I'm fairly sure that a first class welder is a person who can 'weld anything' MIG, TIG, MMA, Oxy, and has a raft of certifications in working with alu, mild steel, stainless in all positions.

Also lets not forget the raft of tickets needed to do the welding bit! Safe use of grinder, MEWP, confined space, manual hander etc etc.
A formal training certificate is always a good place to start but you need to show willing to learn and or experience in the job. Put together a portfolio of what you have done etc to give something to show to bosses and hit the streets and try

Does a second class welder take longer to arrive at the job?
No but he hasn't got room to stretch his legs out
Hi Matt in Australia a first class welder is someone that can pass a weld test eg 4G, 6G, Not all first class welders are tradesman but it is becoming more popular.
A second class welder is someone that can weld but wont have to do a weld test, they usually weld non structual like fences and gates
As for your city and guilds some places might no of it but they wont be recognized offically

In Melbourne there is a bit of a shortage of welders. At work, we use an engineering firm as a sub-contractor that would expand if they could find some more tradies.
Have a look on some of the employment sites out there.
