welding galvi water tank

i have a client thats in the antique trade & hes converting some galvi water tanks & has asked me to weld up the holes were the water pipes went & be invisable.
what would be the best way for me to tackle this i am thinking grind back the galvi make place for butt weld then
1-mig weld it then grind back flush & zinc coat

2-tig weld it
what do you guys suggest the best method for this would be?

"Invisible" will be difficult as the new galvanised coating will be very obvious against the original.

I'd TIG as I'm better at it but no reason MIG with a pen gap wouldn't work either.

In either case you want to get all of that awful zinc out of anything you're gonna weld. It will stop you making good fusion and it is horrid horrid fume wise. DO NOT breathe it unless you like stinking headaches for hours

hes converting them for small tables, in regards to the new coating im generally pretty good at blending otherwise il re galvi the lot then dull down afterwards plus hes using his own solution on them afterwards for ageing

Hi, TBH I'm not sure why he's bothering to disguise them because they're part of the items provenance and don't detract from it. I think it's a good example of re-purposing something and after all it's never going to be a silk purse.

Good. Those "Things" look awfully close to a job a friend got involved in about a year and a half ago. Lots of hassle and a fight to get paid.

i couldnt put up with that kind of hassle, i like my clients paying me when they collect & one even pays as he drops off before i do anything that is brill

this is about right he has already sold a couple off at around the £700mark to dealers hes now looking at selling privately aswell.

You will never lose the holes completely, pretty sure that sheet that the tanks are made from is electro galved not dipped, hot dipping a structure like that will distort it beyond use,
We used to use Zilt sticks to repair galved items, just warm the job up with a torch and rub the sticks on, you can even rub them on a hot weld if you work quick enough

Wonder what sort of person pays £1000 for a tatty old watertank? Wonder if they even care about holes for pipes showing? I get the feeling these mean a higher price..........................lol

Sounds a nice little earner...............wonder if you remember an old TV prog "The Rise and Fall of Reginald Perrin"? He started a business called "Grot" which essentially sold rubbish..................seems to me thats close to reality today, with people paying top dollar for items which can be found at dumps relatively easily.
