Hi,
i've got some threaded inserts made from EN16 which I need to weld into some T45 tube.
Has anyone had any experience with this? Do i need to use special tig rods please?
Many thanks Barry
EN14 to T45 is fairly common with regular er70s2 (a15) mild steel wire. Not sure how EN16 will alter the picture, i think it'll just make preheat (200-250C?) and slow cool more critical.
If you can expand a bit on the application it will give someone like TechnicAl more to go on i.e. might be a better wire choice or one of the dissimilar wires may be suitable and make preheat less critical
Click on the migwelding link at the top of the page and there's a bunch of articles. Under welding 'different steels' there's one for engineering steels. EN16 isn't specifically covered but a good read
I agree with hotrodder. A15 should do the job assuming we are talking thin section. Usually T45 is thin section for roll over bars etc, the A15 filler doesnt quite match the strength but the weld is usually thicker than the tube. Assuming the En16 inserts are also thin or small the material shouldnt cause many problems, its reasonably weldable.
Barry W.....do you have dimensions so we can be certain
Hi,
thanks for your replies.
I'm building some wishbones for an 4x4 off roader. I have been supplied the T45 and am getting the inerts made which are to be threaded for the rosejoints.
The T45 is 45mm OD 3.2 mm thick.
The inserts would be 38mm OD 7mm thick roughly.
It would be good if I could get away without preheating.
Thanks Barry
