Welding Course C&G qulifications

Hi all

I have got the company to fund my City and Guilds Level 1 and 2 welding qualifications at Crawley collage. I know what modules i want to do, i want to do Tig and Mig Level 1 and then TIG stainless steel, TIG Aluminum and Mig. The Tig stainless i will use at work and the other two i will use slightly at work but more at home restoring my Landy.

My question is as quoted thousands of times "use it or lose it" i am consered that i will not use the skills enough. If i passed the course how difficult or how much private work is out there (Kent area) that i could do to keep the skills? Dose anyone else do odd private jobs? are they easy to find?

I have also been told that i can get BS4872, BS/EN 287-288 or ASMEIX i have done a quick search and not really found a description for these standards where can i get a definition?

I daresay if you own old Landys, keeping your skills won't be a problem, there's always another landy owner that needs a bit of welding doing,....
Once other's in your landy circle know you can weld.

If you can get somebody else to pay for ASME IX there is a lot of work out there for you especially if you can cope with offshore. All the job requests for welders I see are asking for ASME.
I wish somebody would pay for my training. Good luck and take whatever training is offered.

Hey there BOb i would recommend that you join up with the TWI if your going to college studying welding an fab, you will get a student membership for free witch will give you access to lots of info and help! you will also be invited to a few semiars (i been to a few)

I would seek advice from them with regards to codings, ASME and ASME IX

TWI? I'm in a similar position. I'm doing level 2 mig this coming year, not for any career reasons. In fact there was/is no real point to me learning as I've no particular resto project etc to do. Welding is something I always wanted to learn to do. Be nice to be able to perhaps earn a few bob and recoup some costs etc. As Ronnie Barker would've put it "If I was the richest man in the world I'd be even richer 'cos I'd do a bit of welding on the side".
