ok guys ive had enough of normal screw type clamps ,you know the sort where the swivel foot parts company from the screw thread

so wheres the best place to buy some carver clamps from?

Carver clamps are brilliant, although pricey. I tend to get them on ebay where a 6 inch clamp costs 30 odd quid + P&P.
They are virtually indestructable and don't mind getting very hot when welding next to them. They can exurt a massive clamping force - handy for getting things to fit!
A good investment

i first came across them when i worked for a lorry mounted concrete mixer manufacturer .... they used to use carver clamps to pull the mixer subframes flat on to the truck chassis before fixing , theses subframes were made of 120x60 rhs and were distorted by the welding of various bits onto them including a 'stool 'for the gearbox mounting

i was well impressed with the clamps took some serious abuse ,bars etc on the tightening handle never saw one break

If you friendly with a tool supplier ask them.
I bought a pair, i think i paid £35 each for 12" ones. (standard duty)
Another make to look out for is Piher, got a few of them too, seem very good quality.

the piher one i have are the 'R' model, paid about £15 each for 300mm ones.
A few of the 'GF' gclamps kicking about, they are seriously heavy duty!!

im watching some on e bay ......

ill check out the pihers too , i had a quick look at the wellington welding website they seem to list most of the pihers range

I bought some cheap an cheerful clamps from BOC the other week about £16 + vat. very similar to a sash cramp but full adjustable as they bite against the back of the bar as you tighten them. I havent abused them yet as i have little doubt they wont take what a carver does, but ok for holding stuff down or clamping a bar to stop weld distortion
