Welding cart/trailer combo?

Looking at embarking on a new project to make a mini welding trailer/combined hand cart. Has anyone done anything similar?

Basically, I occasionally get bits of work (favours/hobby more than professional) doing bit of welding on domestic properties and caravan sites (gates, bannisters etc.) and would find it useful to have a hand cart to carry my little mig set up, gas, generator, vice and basic tools/materials. As i say, i don't do this as the day job and don’t have a van. Having a hand cart that was safe to hitch up to the back of the car would be ideal (and a fun project). My only concern is making something narrow enough to get through pedestrian/personnel gates without being so narrow that it would tip over when cornering behind the car. A common gate that i go through just fits a micro excavator through with an 800mm width, so that’s probably my maximum limit.

Has anyone seen or made anything like this?

This would need to be a variable track width to add stability on the road, there are few ways of achieving this.

Base it round a car Dolly but not so huge. You could then have the welding cart on a much narrower foot print to go through gates. This could be detachable.

Why not buy a readymade small trailer and then just make small cart you load and unload on the trailer.

It will be a lot less problematic to make, and you will also have a trailer for carrying other stuff.
If you are going to build something bespoke to be towed behind a car, especially something very oddball, you will need an IVA and expect to get tugged often.

I’d thought about that but thought the challenge of the project may make it more interesting. But maybe it’s best to just keep clear of any legal risks

A narrow trailer with a top heavy load like a welder and workbench will be very unstable on the road.

A narrow trailer is nearly impossible to reverse. By the time you see it in your side mirrors it is too late and it will jack knife!

You also have to keep your welding equipment dry.

Make up a welding trolley with large dia wheels and a cover. Transport it between jobs on a normal car trailer.
