Welding BZP hardware

My targets project involves stick welding some 12mm BZP nuts and bolts to EN8 plate.Is it necessary or advisable to grind off the plating before welding or does the zinc just burn off?

The zinc will burn off but it will contaminate the weld and the fumes are stinky and not very good for you.

Always advisable to grind off zinc coating before welding.

As above grind off the zinc otherwise you'll get metal fume fever, and trust me thats not nice

By the time you have welded round an M12 nut the remainder of the plating will have disappeared anyway, why not just use self colour nuts and save the bother and the fume.

If you can get hold of unplated nuts.
I have struggled with finding them in the past.
I have Mig welded loads of nuts like this without a problem. Ok usually 1 0r 2 at a time.
