welding bench

im just looking for a bit of advice and would be greatful for any good feed back im building myself a welding bench out of 50x50x3.2 box section and the top plate of the bench is going to be 10mm thick sheet metal the length of the bench will be 8ft and width will be 3ft i was just wanting to know what castors to put on my bench so i can move it out when cleaning up and also to carry the weight of the bench and when im working on it many thanks phil

Castors are sold by size and weight. You should be able to work out a rough idea of the weight of your bench by asking the material supplier what the total weight of your order is. Divide the total by 4 and you know how much weight each castor has to cope with. If you are going to move the bench around on hard floors nylon castors work well, if uneven surfaces are to be encountered solid rubber tyres are better. Depending on how tight your manoeuvring room is I'd tend to make the wheels at one end fixed and the wheels at the opposite end swivel AND braked, less chance of the bench moving if you are swinging hammers or pulling big spanners with a scaffold pole added for extra leverage, you don't want the bench moving around on you.
