Welding a range rover classic chassis

Can someone give me advice on welding a rust hole in my old range rover classic. At the moment it is about the size of my thumb. I shall be using
.8wire and a 145 amp machine, will I have to grind a v or should I be able to just butt weld it's about 1/6 inch thick
Can I ask as well how I can stop burning a hole at the end of a run

i have just either butt or lap welded my series landy chassis, which should be about the same thickness. never had to do any special preparation to the edges just get it nice and clean and remember to chase the rust back otherwise it will come back to haunt you (guess how i know that one). also depending where the patch is, make sure there is no wiring routed through the inside of the chassis.
also if its been waxoyled it helps to take the blowtorch to the section once its cleaned off to melt the last bits out. its amazing how much can still be there even when it looks clean.

as well as wires inside the chassis (drivers side) you should also watch out for the fuel lines

I second the comment about thoroughly cleaning any waxoyl off, although I used white spirit and other solvents rather than a blow torch as I was working near to the fuel lines and waxoyl burns quite well. Even the smallest amount of waxoyl makes it hard to achieve a decent weld

Sorry I have been so long replying but I have to do it on a phone (have not got a computer) so it is hard work reading and writing but I get there in the end.
Thank you both for the info. Not thought about wires and it's close to petrol tank. Must not blow it up god knows what the wife would say, I think she'd be a bit cross

Give it a good wack with a hammer around the rust hole, it will probably grow, it's best to eradicate all the weak metal in one go.

Its a LR always double the hole size you found

as above though, look al around to see what can be burnt, clean back well, no need to V it and whack it upto to 80amps and see how you go, when you clean back it can always get thinner with the more rust,, if you blow holes turn it down a touch, i find it best to blow and fill a hole than drop bird **** and grind back
