Welding a landrove

does anyone know what filler to use on a landrover? It's the bonnet and a rear panel, my cousin has just bought a 300tdi and there's holes from a jack being mounted in the bonnet and a hole for a side exhaust. I've got some spare landrover parts that I can salvage metal from but I'm not sure what filler to use,

As far as I can remember the alloy panels were called "Birmabrite" People tig welding these ally panels often used strips of ally cut from other Land Rover items for the filler rod.

as above, if you have plenty of spare panels just cut thin strips of the same material and use that. guaranteed to be a match that way

Birmabrite rings a bell, I know the series was made of it but didn't realise the discos was as well. Never thought about cutting thin strips, will give that a go.

i thought discos were steel body work? hence the problems with rust?

Nope the body (bar the roof, inner wings and sills) is ally on the 200, 300 and td5 pre facelift, not sure about anything newer though

was going to say, ive done sills on a td5. didnt realise most of the panels were ali though

yeah depends on the model depends where it rusts, my 200 the chassis is completely solid, but the inner wings rusts really badly, when I first learn to weld I was patching loads but with a bit of knowledge behind me I've replaced the entire wings and the rear crossmember, but surprisingly enough my sills are solid. It's mot time so every where is being attacked with a screwdriver and hammer with no holes to be found, and I've gone way above and beyond anything that an mot inspector will do

I love my 200 but my biggest bug bear is there is no cup holders!! I ended up making a panel where the box sits behind the handbrake. Also pretty much every after market CD player is too long to fit in the harness however the ones that don't have a CD player just usb and aux fit lovely as its about a third shorter. There are a few other watch areas, the electrics can be hit and miss especially when idiots have had a go, headliners are usually saggy, water ingress through alpine Windows tend to rust the boot floor, sun roofs leak to be honest the list goes on but all that being said I will always own a 200tdi disco, I love it and regular maintenance will keep it running forever, but you should go in with both eyes open most of these things aren't expensive or complicated to put right

one of the things drawing me to them is the cheap replacement parts. plus its going to end up being covered in farm debris most of its life with me hanging out a window with a rifle...i fitted a radio in a mates disco ages ago and can remember it being a tight squeeze to get it in, dont think we ever got it right but i cant drive without decent music so i will have to ind one that fits lol

And most parts a freely available and lots of discos being broken you can usually get most parts for not a lot of money, I've got a Sony one but most manafacturers now offer one without a CD player. what I like as well is with a landrover its not just a car your buying but into a community as well, lots of landrover only Facebook groups and forums and most of them are very friendly offering both advice and physical help as well.

But I made mine for free from some stainless I was given, also incorporated a switch panel and 4 usb charging ports
