Welding a ball onto rod

Unsure of what the ball is made of as the guy hasn't sent it yet but the rod is going to be 50mm stainless Should I grind a flat spot onto the ball or tack it up and fill the void with weld?

get the ball drilled out to accept the rod down to about 5mm of the opposite side drill a smaller hole and plug weld

What is it for? Why go to all the trouble of drilling it! Just weld it around the bar would be my prefered option.........keep it simple.

I'm am college so drilling is not an option as we don't have any drills in the welding workshop(in fact we have very little of anything) so its tack up and fill or grind and weld

If the rod is 50mm the ball will be larger so the gap will be considerable and will take some filling and tidying up, I'd go with the flat idea to take some work out of the job.

We have a profile burner,power hacksaw angle grinders hammers files and thats about it

th college wouldn't buy bandsaws or cutting wheels on safety grounds

Take it to a machine shop, say it's a college project and they might drill a hole in it for free for you (worked for me in the past for various projects).

Unbelievable, how does this college manage to have students complete their units, meet criteria ect?

As for their excuse "safety grounds" haven't they heard of "risk assessments"? More like an excuse for lack of finance grounds!!

Found out the ball has come out of a coal/ball mill at a power station The guy reckons its got a high manganese content but on reading up about Ball mills most use stainless balls

If the ball was part of some sort of crushing process it could well be some sort of manganese steel. Impact/wear plates and hammers in various types of crusher are usually manganese steel.

i used to work with ball mills ,we didn't use stainless,couldn't tell you the composition but ours rusted..is it magnetic ?.......what dia is the ball?how long is rod?can u get rod into a lathe centre drill and open to create a cup to centre the ball?...have i got it completly wrong?(wouldn't be the first time).......what load is weld under is it decorative ?

Its just going to be used for shaping metal not under any real heavy strain

This is kind of the look I'm going for,,I've rested the ball against another Dollie I made(please excuse the shocking welding I was rushing)

Surface finish is a bit rough for a ball stake, given that it'll need a fair bit of cleaning up attacking it with a grinder will give a rough idea of hardness. Some info on machining and welding high manganese steels here but 308 doesn't seem right to me

I would grind a flat on ball and try a disimilar rod ,ask the technician at college for advice they are normally better welders than the lectuer.

In work when we weld something onto a manganese steel plate we usually use a stainless rod, can't remember which though

Mild steel or lo-hi welds just crack and the bit falls off.
