Welding 8mm plate with Clarke 160TM

I need to butt weld some 8mm plate. Would v-ing both sides of the plate and then welding from the top and bottom be possible? Is this allowed/bad practise?

If not i will have to try to get hold of an Arc welder and learn a new skill!

Do you have a means to pre-heat such as a big propane torch etc.

If you have some scrap give it ago then bandsaw across (perpendicular) the seam and inspect the penetration.

It is for a winch tray so needs to be strong.

Actually yes i do have a propane torch so i may give that a try.

The tray is going to be made out of 4 pieces of 75x100x8mm angle and will be bolted together as well as welded

8mm is very thick for a winch tray, are you winching something very heavy as usually 5/6mm is more than adequate?

In that case i may be over-engineering!

It is going on my Shogun and will see occasional use for recovery on Pay&play sites

i would arc weld it its far too big for the welder you have but with proper prep and a couple of passes would probily be ok.

Most of the home made winch trays for the Shogun/Pajero are 6mm plate, but some people have used 4mm with no issues even pulling a fully loaded LWB out of deep mud.

I'm sure you'll post on the POCUK forums when it's finished (I'm 'rich r' on there too btw)

Then I might get round to making one myself - but I'll be arc welding mine as I don't have mig. Arc welding 6mm plate is dead easy too.

You should be able to do the winch tray with mig if you drop to 5 or 6mm plate.
