The current you need varies from brand to brand of rod and the dials on welders aren't necessarily very accurate. It will also depend on the position, and you usually have to turn down the juice a bit for vertical up. Some rods seem critical as to current, usually the cheaper ones, and some quite forgiving. There should be a current range on the packet, but it's only a rough guide.
Rods seem to need less current on DC than AC.
You really have to try a few on some scrap and see how they run with various current settings and whether they run hot (spatter and undercut) or whether they run cold, and then adjust. At a guess, 120A on AC for a start.
