Hi, only a casual welder but is it possible to weld up to 5 mm steel angle with a Portamig 185 and using 0.6 wire. Only I don't want to buy 0.8 because I would never finish a 5 kg roll. Welder purchased to fix thin French steel on a 2cv

Thanks for the replies, I'm going to make a chassis mounted frame for a bike rack for the motorhome. I think I'll get some 0.8 mm and after this job keep it in case of any more projects requiring thicker metal.

I always use 0.8mm for everything including car repairs ,you may find you are able to as well ,i do however use co2 so use higher power than most ......
