welding 304

am i right in thinking that 304 can be welded with 308 filler?

my father wants a lambda bung welded to some flat bar for reasons unknown...both are 304. i have 308 or 309 stainless rods at the moment, not opposed to buying a small batch of 316 or 312 if needed

Yep you can weld 304 with 308, it'd be better if you've got 308L coz 308L has more chrome in it which helps to replace the chrome that's burn't off when welding it.
