Welding 10mm plate to 5mm box section ?

Hi,

Just wondering whether it would be difficult to weld 10mm plate to 5mm box section and if it is possible, is it a simple case of angling the torch more over so that more heat is on the 10mm plate and also grooving the 10mm plate prior to welding?

I also wonder whether a 200 amp welder will be ok for the job ?

10mm Plate is over the top for a 200amp machine, it could be 'stuck' on with full power and playing the heat around a bit...all depends what it is and whats its purpose will be when welded.... garden ornamental probably ok...anything that is load bearing or structural then you need more power.

Ok thanks, I might have to hire or get someone to weld it for me.

Thats doable with a 200a welder, on full power, make sure you clean any mill scale off the plate first though.

200A will easily do it mate, not sure on the fit up of how your doing it but you may need to V your plate and lay a few stringers over it. dont sweat it

10mm on 5mm box

Hello,

Im new to this and have only done one proper welding job for myself.
I bought a portamig 185, messed about with it trying different metals then went straight in the deep end.

I cut my 9' metal gate in half, welded 10mm cleats on to a 4x4 5mm thick box section for the hinges and welded some 20mm dowel through holes in the cleats. planted the the 10' tall post and hanged the gates onto the cleats.
The gates are still standing two months later.....what a result my new welder paid for itself on the very first job.

200amp will do it but the 10mm plate will suck up the heat.

So you might need a 3-4mm fillet done as a 3-fillet to make sure it's properly welded.

I would tack both sides so the 5mm plate doesn't get pulled or bent.
