welding 1/2" bar to 4mm box will

High I need to weld a support on to my bike stand, the question is what would weld to 4mm box better a 1/2" bar or 3/4" x 3mm tube both are harden steel box is mild. Need a strong weld as must support 400lb!

you probably better with the 3mm wall. tube as its nearer to the 4mm box. You'd need to put a fair bit of head into the 12mm bar

depends on what its doing and how its joined. 400 lb sounds a lot but don't need that much in certain connections, what I mean is were is the strain being taken? Drawings might be better than text in this instance
