Welder Qualification

Well, i've avoided the issue for long enough. I need to get myself a formal qualification for the fabrication of structural steelwork - for one job in particular, but not a bad thing to have handy.

Simple enough job, mig, downhand, 20mm plus thickness. The organisation who is calling the shots don't ask for any named qualification, just a 'suitable qualification'. They are after us suggesting a suitable qualification for them to check up on and say yes or no.

So, after something that does what it says on the tin.

Anyone any experience/tell me what i need to be looking for before i start ringing colleges and make an **** of myself. Ideally i just wanna go and do the test. No time for night classes and all that

BS4872 would be a good catch-all. Non-procedure welder qualification for structural work, etc.

Otherwise, you're looking for a 1G qualification (downhand) to cover whatever materials and thicknesses you need.

In fact - why don't you phone TWI and ask them if they know of any testers in your area. And if they won't tell you cos you're not a member, ask Snowy to do it for you, cos he is. And if that's no good, ask Rodofgod, cos he knows everything!

sounds like you just need an independant asseser to see your work and what your knowledge is on that type of welding and then pay a fair amount for the cert if you meet the criteria

Have you looked at the TWI website? there is lots of info on there, you could even ring up for guidance

I recently took some qualifications at a place in Rotherham for some Nuclear work that we've got coming up. Did 3 tests, all dual codings, asme ix and iso en something. From what i understand that about covers you for everything your likely to come across in a workshop.

Id think Si's suggestion of the BS4872 would be ideal for most of your work Paul, but i think its now called EN287....iirc.

Dont have much to do with that side of it.

Ohhh testing ottt Paulie, ****** comes to us all in the end......... I should think Simon's suggestion should be fine, The TWI should tell you even if your not a member, not bad to join TBH its a rolling fee thats size related (oerr misses)......

Personally tho, I would give the local welding supplies a phone, and ask them who the codeing witness are in the area, they should know, give them a ring and if there like the Herbert in this area there be able to tell you what your need, if there worth there salt there be able to advice on a WPS (if needed) and set up for the test (at a price of course)
