The following pics are welds done by a total novice,a friend of mine which I have let him mess around with my welding plant before, welding up bits of scrap for fun. Ok as he has been playing with the scrap i have shouted at him for moving to fast etc and not leaving enough weld deposited pulling the torch to far away from the weld pool etc, i have also shown him how to weave when welding but i doubt he has had much more than 4 hrs welding.
Now im making a new body for his transit which he has been labouring for me, ie cutting the material and grinding down welds. Tonight we were at the point of adding the sheet steel (2mm sheet) to the frame work (50mm x 50mm x 3mm thick box) being as the body is large and can not be made using 1 sheet of 2mm, there are joints in the sheet steel on the floor, under each joint is a 50mm box runner. Each joint is two sheets parted by about a 4mm gap, the idea being to weld down the gap to ensure both sheets are welded together and welded to the box underneath. Now i had already tacked the sheets in place ready to weld up, when i decide i was going to have something to eat before i started welding the sheet down. I told him i would be 15 mins, and when i got back this is what i saw
The pic is poor quality as it was taken using torch light and a mobile phone. But to be honest i didn't think the weld was that bad for a total novice. So any one who is just starting out and learning to weld, after 4 or 5 hrs practice it could look like this
