Weldable Digger pins

What material should I spec for weldable digger pins?

45mm pins, 160mm internal unsupported span.

On a 5.5T digger fitted with quick hitch.

These pins will be on a forklift adapter.

I am guessing plain old mild just wont cut it but do I need full hardened & will that be an issue with welding them in.

Im sure EN19 / 4140 is what’s used. If you have hardened ones they’ll wear your digger eyes / quick hitch prematurely

En16 is a cheap reliable option, easy to turn and weld.

EN19 is great until it snaps. It is through hard and will become brittle through work hardening.

EN30 or is it EN36? Usually a much better option case hardened with a ductild inner core.

I use hydraulic ram rod, its weldable and available out of the skips of most decent hydraulic shops.

That will be EN8 chromed

Possibly , its more than tough enough and it welds.

Been asked to repair a bucket for a local firm - not an issue, he’s supplying all the kit and caboodle. however, he’s asked if I know where to pick up spare (i’m assuming weld-in) pins for the saddles, which has got me thinking... do these pins need to be hardened? Or are they some specific...
