does anyone use a zinc primer on there bare metal before welding it. apperently its very conductive ad atleast theres some protection under the welds !!
Yes, I use weld thru zinc primer on the inside of box sections, spot/plug welded overlapped joints etc. But I scrape/ sand the zinc off the outside of the area before welding. Best to weld bare steel to bare steel. The "weld thru" primer is best for the bits you can't get to after welding.
It will spit and not weld very well. The name of the paint is a bit of a misnomer. It is meant to protect the bits you cant paint after the welding is complete.
No, you spray parts that are going to be inside of, for example the sill on a car with zinc weld thru primer. Spray before welding as once the box section is closed you cant spray in there!
It is preferable to leaving the inside of box sections as bare metal.
If you're going to grind the paint back off the areas you're going to weld, like through the hole of a plug weld etc then surely you could just use any old primer as it won't come into contact while welding?
I was under the impression that say for example you have a sheet with a few holes in read for plug welding. The surface you're welding, inside a sill for example that will then be closed up, you spray the weld through primer inside the sill and on the reverse of the plate you're welding in. Then with the plate in place, you'll see primer through the holes which you can plug weld as normal?
That is right sphinx, the weld thru primer does not burn off like other cheap primers and can be left as the top coat in the sill as Zinc primer does not absorb moisture.
The plug welding holes; if you scratch the zinc primer off just in these holes then the plug welds will work fine. Leave the primer in the holes and you can get spitting.
