Heated disagreements
Welding 100mm solid square bar to the centre of a 520x520x30mm thk plate. Lots of them. Obviously heavy loads imposed. Something to do with quarrying, not sure quite what.
I've been starting the weld half way along one side, welding the first 50mm, turn left, weld 100mm side, then turn right and weld half way along that side.
Turn round and repeat. Quite a bit of torch manipulation but can be done leaving a tidy job. Foil back gloves to try and reduce the heat melting my hands. I've positioned the stop starts so they are away from the corners where load stresses would be concentrated. (plus the tacks are on the corners) Laddo doing it the same way.
Client (who thinks he's a bit of a welding pro) says why not weld one side, stop, weld next side etc, leaving a joint on each corner. I say no, it wont fall off but not good practice, he say yes.
Fact it should be three runs to build a decent fillet has escaped him. He wants only one run to avoid bending the plate.
They rock a bit on the bench after welding, but only slightly - nothing to fret about on things like that.
Jobs done and away in the morning, but what do you lot think. Good practice my way, or doesnt matter a jot?
Arms like Popeye tonight.
