Weld splashes on windows!

Hi all,

Has anyone got any tips for removing nasty mig splatter from windows?

Ive scraped them with a stanley knife scraper and it has removed the pyhsical spatter but i cant seem to remove the stains that are left.

I was thinking about getting some acetone, but im not too sure if this would work.

Any ideas?

Hi Chris, welcome to the forum.
You're very unlikely to be able to completely remove it. It will have actually burned into the glass so even if you can remove the rust marks you'll still have small pits.
Windscreen I take it? If it's a rare one and you can't get a replacement then it might be worth enquiring about having the marks polished out if they're not too deep. Try a phonecall to a few auto glass places and see what they say, they might also have suggestions for something to remove the staining.

I do a bit of part-time window cleaning and you wont get it all off a it is actually small fragments of the mild steel.

I have a few places where some grinding has taken place near the windows and as Wozzaaah says, it has melted into the glass, when you scrape it you knock the small ball or splinter of metal off, what's left behind is a dent and some very small metal particals. I've used cleaning compounds/creams and it can look better but a small brown mark will re-appear i'm afraid

I havve heard jewelers rouge or similar will help, as long as you can get any metal fragments out first.
If you can get it out try filling any holes with something like glass type super glue, to stop it re rusting maybe.

Once the loose stuff is removed you could maybe try pickling the embedded fragments with jenolite or some other acid treatment to avoid rust stains reappearing. I had this on my Landrover; stupid previous owner had (badly)repaired the bulkhead without covering up the glass. Once I picked off the lumps with a razor I didn't really notice it; any rust staining was removed by the wipers leaving only a few black speckles.

I think Jenolite or similar would just turn the marks black, it probably won't get rid of them.

yeah it would turn black. Your only hope to stop specks rusting over again is to block the atmosphere from geting to them. ie: my super glue or liquid glass method.

Superglue ought to work I suppose, it bonds well and is transparent so it would certainly be worth a try for the sake of a quid or so. You gan get those superglue pens, that would make it easier to apply too.

ok did a search as it may help some of my customers but it doesn't look too good:

''Another tip: to polish fine scratches in glass (nothing too deep, eg if you can feel it with your fingernail it's too deep) smeer it onto a fresh very clean very soft buff on a polishing motor and polish gently on a very slow speed. This is how it is used in the Motor Windsrean Industry, so it should work on glass cabinets too.''

Sounds like very fine polishing as opposed to getting into the 'dip/hole' made by the hot metal.....

Im going to buy some cheap glass, expose it to welding sparks and then try some things on it.
