Weld pictures.

Hi,

I am welding a 1mm mild steel plate into the boot area of 1980's Fiat. I have cut the rotten area out, put a lip on the new plate I made and slid it under the metal on car. The trouble is the metal on the plate is thicker that what is on the car. It is also a little awkward to get at. Below are pictures of the welding. I have an Oxford 200-1 welder. I am not sure if I have the voltage on welder high enough but don't want to burn holes. Any commends welcome. Have Oxford set to 1 on course knob and 6 on fine for anyone that has one.

To my unpracticed eye there seems to quite bit of stop/start about those runs. With the welder turned down to minimum cleanliness is more important than with thicker metals at a higher setting. As long as you can stand on the new plate without it wanting to break away they should be good enough as little of the boot floor can be classed as a stressed member. Grind the welds closer to flush with the surrounding metal, blast on undercoat, top coat (and underseal underneath) and it should pass the MOT.

Those do look cold.

I find it easier to up the power and move faster.

They are all sitting on the surface of the metal . The best technique is to have the heat up on something like 2c 5f and do a series of joined up tacks basically. Looks a lot neater abd much less to grind off.

Thanks for the replys. Yes there are lots of starts and stops. Tought I wasn't supposed to weld for too long on thin steel.

Will up the power and try another bit. Looking at youtube at people welding. They seem to do the welds really fast. I can't do that. Must be the heat is too low.

look at the stitch welding section on the mig tutorial. Heat up and stitch it in sections to avoid warping. Its how i do all my thin stuff

Yeah you can move quite fast even when doing the thon metal technique. Depends on how God you are.

god doesn't need to stitch, just clap his hands

As above, welds are far too cold, the weld is just sitting on top of the material rather than penetrating into it. Turn the volts up and maybe reduce the wire feed speed
