Weld in bearing houses

A guy I know made me a pair of top rose joints to replace the standard top ball joint they have only been on a week. I have not pushed the vehicle either just around the farm nothing like major off road.

But the circlip has disappeared and pushed the bearing up so I now need to re-think his design.

Are there better options for these bearings with something more substantial to hold the bearing in than a circlip? I have seen these bad boys but i need something from this country in metric fitting.

they do not last long with big tyres playing in mud, and they put the camber out a fair bit once the truck is lifted. but I may be going back to them soon and shimming the camber right up

is the rose joint bearing pushed into a blind housing and held with a circlip ?? or has it got a circlip on both sides ?

the primary forces on that joint are going to be from the floor upwards , downwards force when the axle is hanging on the joint will be just as the wheel drops into a hole or when cross-axled

if the housings were turned upside down and the circlip was facing towards the floor would that prevent the bearing from pushing out of the housing if the housing is blind

are they designed to bolt onto the top or bottom of the horizontal piece of chassis because lowering them would change your suspension geometry

Maybe barking up the wrong tree but were the rose joint mounts intended to be bolted in the other way up? Or if that doesn't work how about on the other side of the truck

That would put the circlip on the bottom

Get new housings machined with a internal step on the top side to support the bearing & fit the circlip on the bottom where there is less stress. You could also cross drill the housing through the edge of the bearing outer race & insert 2 roll pins as an extra support.
TBH it wasn't great engineering practice to expect a circlip to support the weight of an off road 4x4.

Decent quality circlip installed in correct groove will hold a fair old load - use them in a lot in our designs.

Looking at that, the spring is acting on the bottom arm, so the upper arm is simply holding the wheel up - the upright itself moves the arm up and down. But I wonder if the sideways load is rocking the bearing in the housing and loosening the fit?

I dont think a circlip is going to cut the mustard in this case. I think I am safer going back to standard ball joints. Unless there are any better ideas.

you do, I need stronger inners they keep breaking at the threaded part on the inners

no that is not a option if they gave way then the bearing would come out completely

no they were desinged for the circlip to be on top as if they parted company the other way the bearing would come out fully

yes i think you could be correct the camber alters immensely over terrain and when cornering and breaking so this will rock the bearing sidways
