Howdo all.

In a bid to tidy the place up, I've got more than enough for a trip to the local scrappy but I'm wondering what to do with my collection of gas cylinders and fire extinguishers. I, err, acquired them with plans to use them but With the best will in the world, I'll never get round to doing anything with them so it's time they went. I know the scrappy won't take whole cylinders but if I put the slitting disc through them, (suitably purged of course), what are my chances?

I've weighed in cylinders cut in half before (I just put them on the saw and cut them in half). I noticed at our local scrap yard (EMR) that there was a hugh pile of them but non were cut up.
Just give them a ring before hand or pop in and ask?

I've been told they can still pay 'some people' in cash as well

lol i was sent a letter to join the scheme. it might have been 150 quid for 3 years. i rang em up and told em im not getting one as i dont carry crap in my van. i just let the customers get rid

The scrappers I go to will credit your debit card, strictly no cash.

Where I go they require you to be a 'member', issuing a membership card after showing proof of address which you hand over when weighing in. They pay with a cheque or debit your credit card.

Ref most of the above comments. Have any of you noticed less of the vans/wagons patrolling the streets looking for scrap? You know the ones, Driver looking right, passenger looking left (both looking shifty) Dare not leave anything lying around!

Actually, yes. Also the scrap steel pile in the local scrapyard seems smaller these days.

It would be interesting to look at the accounts at Companies House for scrap metal merchants over the past few years.

There's no requirement to have photo id - I don't have any photo id and I still got paid (credit 'refund' to my debit card).

I've done a scrap run today for work. £130 a tonne for clean plate and girder grade. The worst it's been for a long time but he said it is due to start going up again.

Still, it keeps the pikeys away.

No demand for steel last I heard, 2 weeks ago. £130 is pittance to be honest, but getting £50 from the scrap run every month keeps me in beer for a few evenings.

Re the gas bottles, you'll be inundated with offers to take them off your hands if you were to put them up on here. Failing that, purge, remove the valve and cut them in half.

Bede, there ripping the pi** out of you, clean plate and steel is currently returning £170-£180 a ton depending on area, and instead of going up, it'll start falling as the russian ports start opening up after the winter freeze
