Weighing in motors and transformers

I have a number of old washing mahcine type motors and 240v-12v transformers. Probably about 20kgs or so?

Whilst I know there's copper inside them, the casings etc are made from alloy/steel. So what I'm wanting to know is, what are they classed as at the scrappies? Are they worth much?

Classed as mixed metal, and worth less than pure metal.

If you can dismantle the cases and weigh them in as "straight" ali, then you'll get a bit more. Unwinding the motors to get straight copper might take you a few evenings...

For 20kg's probably not worth the fuel costs to the scrappy.......imho....

Last time I weighed anything in

Washing machine motors:

Cast ally 45p per kilo
Copper wire £2.96 per kilo
Steel 9 p per kilo

Complete Motors & transformers: not sure, I don't bother stripping the armatures

You can strip the laminations off transformers by putting them on a fire, but thin wire will probably disappear.

Unwinding field coils is laborious, but I do it in front of the telly instead of knitting.

Bear in mind that some windings are aluminium and not copper, you get a feel for the weight, otherwise you need to scrape some varnish off to be sure.

Forgot to update this thread, the motors were pretty easy to strip and sort out the alloy/copper/steel once you got the nack of it

The transformers were a no-go though, impossible to get the copper off so had to be weighed in as mixed

From I think 2 motors and about 2ft of leftover thin plumbing pipe it came to 3kg on their scales = £7 for copper, £2500/tonne

41kg batteries = £6, £150/tonne
18kg alloy = £5, £300/tonne
4kg brass = £5, £1200/tonne (taps from an old sink and a toilet handle)
160kg mixed scrap = £10, £60/tonne

And best of all I now had some space outside my shed
But a week later and it's starting to pile up again
