Weed or flower.........?

A friend dug over a patch of garden while hadn't been disturbed for a year or three and within a couple of weeks a carpet of these has appeared. My first thought was 'weed' but when we pulled one there was a bulb at the end, am I right in thinking weeds grow from a root and not a bulb?

I worked as a Greenkeeper so if it's not grass I'm not interested ...... ]

My other half thinks it's probably some kind of anemone or aconite.

Could well be mokshood / Wolfsbane - VERY toxic as stated above..handling without gloves is a bad idea..

It's not wolfsbane, different leaves.
Does appear to be winter aconite, although it's not actually a member of the aconitum genus, it is still poisonous, but has a different chemical makeup and int quite as deadly as the likes of the other mentioned plants. Actually related to the buttercup.
If it flowers yellow I'm pretty sure that's what it is. Is it under a patch of trees?

Often grow in shade. Not a U.K. Native if I remember correctly.
Harmless unless ingested. I'd wear gloves when pulling them out though.

Yes saw it back in the day, it made quite an impression as I was only a young-un then, and it was repeated a few years ago on (I think) BBC4 so I watched it again, I thought it had stood up to the passing years quite well.

We were just talking about it here in the office the other day and I reckon the original short story that he expanded into The Day of the Triffids would actually ring far more true in the modern world.

It was about some tin-pot dictator who had a scientist that had been educated in top western universities and managed to splice fungus and plant together. They then sent seeds to horticultural clubs suggesting it was a new wonder crop and asking them to grow it as a test and give them feedback. The gardeners were very proud to have been "specially selected for their reputation" and dutifully planted the things which then bore fruit that were more like puffballs and in time exploded releasing very fine spores that would grow on anything organic (including inside the lungs of anyone unfortunate enough to breathe them). Descriptions of the military trying to control these things with flamethrowers and burning bodies whilst society generally collapses follow until the story concludes.
