Wedge type tool post

Hi members
I know this question has been raised many times i am thinking off putting a wedge type tool post on to my Harrison 140 metric lathe I know a lot of you members have done so what would really help me is what would be a ideal size tool post how easy would it be to fit to my 140 lathe and any recommended places to buy one

Is also known as the Aloris brand. IIRC they are the originator of that style.

Look at the lowest a tool holder can go, the shelf where the tool set's.
Is it too high to be on centerline for your lathe ? Or will you adjust the stop rod to raise it up some ? (that is best)
You can mill off the bottom of oversized insert toolholders to get the tool tip down to centerline, but ussually only for a special tool.

Sizing a Tool Post for your lathe

• Measure the height from the top of your compound slide to the spindle centre. This height should be => than H-min + the height of the tool bit cutting edge. Our Model 100 'Slim' tool holder will help on lathes with limited height.
• Tool Size. Do the tools you want to use fit the tool holder (h and w)?
• Mounting Stud. Will your stud fit the hole in the tool post (øD and A). If not, can it be replaced?

Most of the listings have dimensions on them which should help you decide.

I have a Dickson T3 style tool post on my Elliott Omnispeed lathe which can take a maximum of 25mm sized tools.

One of the disadvantages of a Dickson style tool post is that the tool holders are expensive and they are not very easy to make yourself.

The Dickson T3 tool post is the maximum size my lathe can accept and while I can use a wide variety of tool sizes up to 25mm, the tool post is fairly large and does sometimes block my view of the work a bit.

I guess what I am trying to say is, that the biggest tool post you could fit on your lathe is not always the best option.
