I heard a weather-man being interview on radio today, and he said that they'd been using the expression 'in the trade' for years - seems the media have seized on it to make it sound more dramatic, although it's been pretty wild here today...never really got light. Great thunder and lightening though.

I saw a weather man on tv state it was an American term

Weather Bombs do occur and it is a used term but this is hardly one! Ask a Kiwi about the real weather bombs that they get down there. This stuff is all par for the course up here in the Bowland Hills mid December time and didn't hit unexpected or by any means too fast to predict which seems to be the true definition of a weather Bomb.

I reckon wheelie bin blowing over is equivalent to 7 on the Beaufort Scale with "OMG TRAMPOLINE!" equating to gale force 8:

We found a trampoline in the side field after a storm a few years back, never found out who it belonged to can only assume it travelled over a few miles coz everyone knows everyone here

Well people really do notice when the media start telling us about the extreme weather that is about to, at best, completely wreck our lives, or at worst, kill us all.

It seems to be the norm to have reports of the most severe winter yet, massive snow, Siberia temperatures etc regardless of whether they are actually coming our way or not.
But, it makes news...

The wind here is just the normal for the time of year, a bit more snow and sleet than we normally get but it's the winter. It's nothing that we shouldn't be getting, their just Jazzing it up to make it sound different
