I would show you mine but broke another camera and cannot justify getting a replacement.

Things that need grinding and cutting. Even after being in a sealed pocket, the camera lens is not operating properly.

I will have to start using a ziploc bag or make a sealed box from which it is possible to photograph the gritty stuff.

That's why I always avoid grinding/cutting like the plague whenever possible. Grinding dust is so fine and abrasive that it's evil to owt it touches, isn't it. Just the thought of getting that dust on my gear makes me cringe somewhat, so I'll usually spend twice the amount of time if needs be doing something by other means.

I guess a plastic bag wouldn't provide useful protection for long either. I'd go with the sealed box route if you can.

You have the knack for finding decent condition, cheap vices. With the jaw inserts, just copy the Paramo ones, adjusting size to suit, else make some smooth inserts etc. Standard inserts are pretty much the same across brands.

Inspired by a thread over on Garage Journal, I had a close look at the end of the fixed jaw and found a number stamped there. Just a figure '1' on its own. No date, no other symbol, nothing.
Now wondering what the hell that means. Is it, as I suspect, the model of the vice? The army green colouration might suggest wartime production and the slightly rough finish supports that. Otoh, if this was army issue, where's the War Dept stamp or kit number? Perhaps it was un-issued and disposed of after the war.

That's likely a production marking, so that they could keep the various parts matched up during machining and fitting. Most parts were a hand fit rather than to general tolerances, so each pieces fit was specific to one unit. If you check closely, you'll likey find that same number stamped on the body/rear jaw, front jaw and possibly the screw and inserts too.

With regards the military markings, the crows foot/broad arrow seems to be the common marking from around WWII, or possibly a plate with an ASC? number. Post WWI & WWII, possibly each force had their own marking. I have a 1936 Air Ministry unit which has a crown above AM marking. WWI period, hard to tell if any marking was used around then. That's about as much as I've been able to surmise from the range of gear spanning the pre and post war years which I have here, so that is mainly guesswork from what I've personally seen.

When I was young, everybody referred to the 'War Department' even though the MoD had been created immediately post-war, but the continuation of the WD symbols (even if not accompanied by the letters WD) and especially with the plethora of war-surplus items on the used market, meant that most were familiar with the old useage and so it continued in common parlance.
