waxoyl for rusty floor pan?

a friend of mine drives a 96 hyundia accent, its done 122k and its going rusty, it has got a hole in the rear ache which im going to sort, never done any welding to body work but after much reading im sure i will do ok.

the floor pan has alot of what i would call surface rust at the rear, there is no holes and no large flaking parts, its been adviced on MOT. ive been asked if i can treat this to get some more years out of the car, is this just a case of removing what i can with a wire brush on an angle grinder than going over with a thick coat of waxoyl or is there anything better to use?
needs to be on a budjet as the car isnt worth much and ive just charged him £600 for fitting a new clutch, exhaust and lower arm.

on another note 10 months ago i cut some rust out my own car, welded in 11 patches so all the rust was gone, then i painted over any bar metal or wire brushed rust areas with hammerite (might have been a bad idea). then did 2 thick coats of waxoyl (hammerite brand). check is recently and its holding up but around the welds there is some little air bubbles were its started the rust, should i wire brush these and then re waxoyl? also stone chipped the sills but this is chipping off and rusting again

just my opinion .clean rust of as best as can 2k etch prime surface. it can be hand painted paint with enamel smoothrite or whatever. i find hammered enamel isnt up to much and pinholes . then cover with waxoil if its hidden

My not fav subject , having driven many bangers over the years car wise and tryed to restore most to a reasonable level of condition rust was always a prob.The method i ended up with was to get some more life out the rusty bits first clean up best u can then cure rust it, let it totaly dry then as u say put on some waxoil say 2 coats if the prob is external .There are better ways but cost rises as u go Frost Autobody website shows the better products u pol is some off the best out there.Tryed same method hammerite and then waxoil seemed to not be the best process as waxoil cannot get at rust to displace moisture or possibly a build up of moisture behind the paint.all the best c

waxoil does very little over existing rust

id clean it up best you can , then a bit of zinc primer and gloss enamel or spray underseal

i go with the gloss paint , it might carry on rusting but at least you can jet wash it over and spot any problem areas

or if its a bit of a shed , just brush some old oil or grease over the scabs

Waxoil is a fantastic tried and tested product. However. 2 things. It will only protect from water ingress/rust, if applied over clean metal or painted surface so 1) If you paint it on top of existing rust, it will promote the rust by sealing water in. and 2) a few years ago, i did some welding on a chassis leg that i did not know had been treated with Waxoil. It became a boiling pool in the chassis and finally ran out of one of the drain holes. I still bear the scars to this day!!

as mentioned, if its rusty then its too late for waxoil, also, choose a better product than hammerite.

As above, you have to "fix" the rust first before covering.

1. Wire brush/abrasive cleaning will make it look like its gone but it is probably still there in surface imperfections.

2. Once mechanically clean I then use a rust neutraliser, pick your favourite, phosphoric acid, vactan, Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80 (that's mine).

3. You can then apply "paint", be it a zinc based like Steve suggests, epoxy 2k etc.

4. Then waxoyl/stone chip.

If you don't do steps 2 & 3 it will rust again. Even with all 4 steps it may still rust especially if you can't get behind the panel/box section to treat exsiting corrosion

Out of interest - a few of my resto pals use this http://rust.co.uk/epoxy-mastic.cfm as a non - iso (and hence easily sprayable) epoxy primer - might try it on my next job to see how it goes.

you use a wire bruxh in a small angle grinder, then paint this on after, allow to dry, then use normal paint over the top, then wax treat and jobs a good one
