Wave - winder....

Got a Douglas - AVO wave winder here, in really mint condition.
Bit of an impulsive purchase, with the original intention being to open up some ideas for simple coil -winding such as might be required on older motorcycles.
A linear winder would have been the thing, really, but why do wave - winders exist, and what are the uses of the things ?
There's some head - scratching going on, I can tell you.....

A good question. I remember wave-wound being used in r.f. circuitry.

The coils are self supporting and have a lower capacitance, which can be important in rf circuitry. A downside is that the dc resistance is higher.
I'm pretty certain that all the wave-wound coils that I'm familiar with used Litz wire, which is multi-stranded.

Dc motors can be lap wound or wave wound. I stripped a lap wound armature last week with a view to rewinding it, even bought the wire but then I found a couple of spare motors so didn't need to.

I used to have a linear AVO winder. It went many years ago without me ever using it. I did use another in the 80s to rewind coils for Lucas alternators.

That'd make sense. The part -circle 2 - coil stators would be handy to be able to replicate....

Same story. A throw-out from work that sat on a shelf unused and unloved for years until I needed the space

I'd like to see pics of the wave-winder tho.

They have a variable speed mechanism to change the feed ratio for different thicknesses of wire

That's the beast. The previous owner used it to rewind transformers in professional flash guns.

I've just checked and see that I sold it to a chap in Darligton, in 2005

That's what I thought. The older unpotted stators all failed over time. Soaked in oil, heated and shaken silly on some machines, it's a wonder that they lasted as long as they did.

Sort-of wondering how a wave-wound one would function under such conditions, but in the potted form.
There might be some advantages to be had, somehow or other.
