Water in Garage - sealing walls?

My wifes niece moved into a new house a couple of months ago and today there is water pouring into the rear of the brick built garage. The previous owners have built the ground up against the rear of the brick garage (about 2 ft) and had paving laid with no visible gap. It obviously needs digging out, reinforcing wall, gap with drain, etc but as a temporary fix, could they paint the inside with a tanking or bitchumen paint?
Anyone done this? What would it do to the bricks if they are soaked behind the paint?

at most drill and inject 12mm holes between the bricks 3 quarter of the way through about 4inch apart and squirt damp proof cream in

I did 2 rows in daughters garage and it worked

use a cement tanking slurry, its what it is made for, follow instructions.

mixed with sbr bonding agent you can buy both from wickes in small amounts you will have to paste some on the floor near wall as well to make the seal

Put a single row of blocks inside and build a timber wall on top? Need to organise some sort of drainage though which might be a tad tricky.

first off im going to be blunt here your great idea of a wall built up and a drain wont work not on the outside that is inside yes but not outside unless you go alll the way up and roof over it

as its a brick garage designed not to be waterproof in the first place you either leave it as a garage or improve it into something else

main point in this remove whats causing the issue in the first place build a retaining wall elsewhere 3ft away and lay a drain in so the water runs away

I suspect this is a no answer to this as people want a nice level area and expect other areas not to leak in

its best to answer this before any more suggestions but its not wise to seal water into brick or stone

i had a garage not as bad as that but they built the flagstones to close to the garage what ment water on the inside a lot of the year was not untill i moaned they put a gully to remove the water was not perfect but better and that was at near dam proof level not 2 foot

dont bother trying to quick fix a few bricks some board to stack a few bits on for a day or 2 get and dig it out

As a very short term fix for similar I've used a rubberised roof sealing compound that has fibreglass hairs in it . it can be painted on wet walls ,floors & roofing materials . I used a stubby 5x 2" stiff bristled applicator brush to put it on then dusted it off with cement powder the next afternoon . Came from B&Q cost about £ 35 for a 5 litre can it's very thick & sticky , can be removed with white spirit . The brushes can be kept soft overnight by fully submersing them in water ..shake it out well the next day you want to use the brush
