Waste oil heater

Went for an MOT on a van other day. It was freezing cold but they had a waste oil burner. What an awesome bit of kit. I have read loads about them but seeing one in action I was most impressed. Such a clean burn and a massive amount of nice dry heat.
I am very very sensitive when it comes to fumes but there were none - far better than gas.
It was heating a big old warehouse type building quite easily. Bloke said it uses about 20L of waste oil a day. Not bad for a place that size.
I may get one for my warehouse now - I am sure plenty of people will give you used engine oil.
Does anyone know if they do one for heating water instead of just blown hot air?

As you might have guessed there are legal hoops to jump through. You need a permit to operate one and you or whoever donates oil may need a waste carrier's licence.

Typical flippin ********. It was far cleaner than any woodburner.
I am aware of the waste carrier's licence. Needed for people picking up waste veg oil from their local chippy. Legislation gone mad and perpetrated by some very dodgy people in the waste oil business.
We had some loony shipping IBCs of used veg oil through our network. They were cutting the tops off the IBC - pouring in the used oil - then sealing them with cardboard and shrinkwrap!!!

The garage heaters are generally a kind of pan that the oil drips into. My cousin has a garage with one, and, im told, the pan needs cleaning periodically, but other than that...

If you want to heat water (for your home CH etc) then google "Kroll" and look for their burners that look just like a normal kerosene burner. There are other companies who make them too, but i know of people having no end of issues with the coppies, but i also know somone (as in have seen in real life) with a kroll unit, and they are very happy with it.

IIRC, youre looking at about £1.3k or somthing for the burner, and then you need a compressed air source, but, beyond that, its free heating.


We heated our home on biodiesel for a couple of winters, but now use a mix of glycerol and sawdust - works so well i have not even bothered to plumb in the bio boiler yet!

Correct. I supply waste transfer notes to suppliers, but am exempt from the carriers licence, when collecting veg oil for personal use.

Garage I worked in at 16 had one, used to fill the tank, fill a big cast dish with parrafin, put balls of burning paper in the dish then shove it in the bottom.

It was all auto from then as long as the tank didn't run out, as you couldn't put parrafin in a hot dish or it just lit

Only maintenance was a filter for the oil and an "injector" to clean, however that was cleaned by running a 10mm drill through it

At that time we had a good source of oil from our cars and the main dealers next door, I suspect a lot has changed in 16 years mind

I'm not sure on the brand, it was a long time ago, was a proper bit of kit that also gave my my first lesson in welding something that wasn't a car, we made the flue from sheet we rolled round a big pipe

i used to have a salamander...awesome heat!..but used eject the top half several feet in the air when you shut it down..(it had a" butterfly" choke disc type thing which closed the chimney)whoosh! quite scary!

The police in swansea along with trading standards were threatening local takeaways for giving their waste oil away. They said it HAD to be to a licenced carrier. A local bio fuel supplier was behind it protecting their supplies...........

Its the Environment Agency who deal with the issues. I cant see why Trading Standards would have any concern in the area at all.

The hag next door sent Environmental health around here, who did not really understand the set up, but let it lie. She complained a bit more, so Environmental Health sent around the Environment Agency.

Nice chap turned up, looked over everything. Told me that he had to move once due to a bad neighbour!

(she gave up with Environmental Health then... next time she called the fire brigade.... And then, when they were happy, she called Calor gas...)

Before you even think of a waste oil heater mention it to your insurer ! They are one of the main causes of workshop / garage fires and insurers hate them so be prepared for hike in premium or even cancellation of policy.
Also you have to apply for a Small Waste Oil Burner Environmental Permit from the local council to operate one due to the amount of pollutants they put into the air.

My local sewage plant and waste incinerator are far worse - along with a new woodchip power station. It is amazing what they get away with if they are green..........

Are Salamanders legal? we had one in the early 70s to heat a shared workshop. We were under the impression they were banned then. Still used it though. My mate took his girlfriend into the garage one night, put down some old car seats alongside it & got down to business, then fell asleep. He woke up at about 2am red raw & scorched down one side. Should have turned round at half time!
